Great Success!! Virtual Forum on the Role of Hong Kong Maritime Arbitration in China’s International Shipping and Trade
On 7 January 2021, the Joint Forum on the Role of Hong Kong Maritime Arbitration in China’s International Shipping and Trade (the “Joint Forum”) was successfully held. The Joint Forum aimed to promote the use of Hong Kong maritime arbitration to the Chinese users. It was the very first virtual forum organized by the HKMAG together with four renowned universities in China. It had received tremendous support from the Hong Kong SAR Government, shipping organizations, shipping companies, P & I Clubs, maritime law associations, arbitral institutions, esteemed universities, and scholars.
Ms Teresa Cheng, GBS, SC, JP, Secretary for Justice of the HKSAR and Mr Philip Yang, former Vice-Chairman of the Documentary Committee of BIMCO and Full Member of HKAMG delivered speeches at the opening of the Joint Forum. Mr Danny Mok and Captain Lee Fook Choon, Committee Members and Full Members of HKMAG, introduced the BIMCO Law and Arbitration Clause 2020 (Hong Kong) and discussed the practice of Hong Kong maritime arbitration under the HKMAG terms. Other distinguished participants expressed diverse views on Hong Kong maritime arbitration which were useful and thought-provoking.
The Joint Forum was chaired by Mr Li Lianjun, partner and Head of Shipping Litigation Department of Reed Smith Richards Butler Hong Kong. Mr Li had contributed significantly to the success of this Joint Forum, for which HKMAG is most grateful.
