Membership
The lists of Full Members and Members maintained by HKMAG provide the industry with a source of experienced maritime professionals of varied backgrounds with experience also in arbitration matters.
Full Membership and Membership of the Maritime Arbitration Group is subject to approval by the HKMAG Committee and is open to any individual who is a Hong Kong citizen or a permanent resident in and of Hong Kong interested in Maritime Dispute Resolution with commercial or legal experience in maritime fields and knowledge of the arbitral process.
Applications for Membership
Full Members – Applicants will have to demonstrate to the Committee that they have sufficient experience, judgement and conflict-free handling of maritime arbitration disputes. Applicants are required to be Hong Kong citizens or permanent residents in and of Hong Kong.
Applicants will be required to provide evidence of the extent and nature of maritime arbitrations conducted over the previous 5 years and whether these were as sole arbitrator, as a member of a tribunal, or as tribunal Chairman. Applicants will also need to indicate the number of awards published in each of the last 5 years, specifying how many were documents only or after an oral hearing. In addition, the applicant will need to indicate how many of the awards were drafted for his/her colleagues’ consideration.
The applicant will be required to attach to the application form a copy of his/her c.v., two specimen awards drafted by him/her, one of which involved a contested oral hearing, and a specimen interlocutory order made by him/her regarding a contested application. In addition, a list of courses attended, pupillage, studies and reading material must be listed on the application form.
Applicants are required to be Hong Kong citizens or permanent residents in and of Hong Kong.
If the Committee feels that the applicant does not meet the criteria for Full Membership, the Committee may recommend that an applicant first join the list of Members in order to gain more experience and industry recognition.

Members – This membership category is intended for applicants who have experience in acting as arbitrator or as arbitration advocate and who wish to gain more experience of sitting as arbitrator in maritime arbitrations. Applicants are required to be Hong Kong citizens or permanent residents in and of Hong Kong.

Supporting Members – Supporting Membership is for those individuals who do not regularly practise as maritime arbitrators and corporations who wish to support the work of HKMAG. For a small annual subscription, Supporting Members can become involved in the work of HKMAG, by joining Committees and advising and developing the program of HKMAG activities. In addition, Supporting Members will receive regular information on the HKMAG’s activities and invitations to the Group’s events.
Individual Supporting Members should be at least 25 years of age, and able to demonstrate that they have either been qualified as a solicitor or barrister or equivalent foreign lawyer or have had suitable commercial experience for a minimum of 5 years . Corporate Supporting Members may nominate up to 5 representatives.
Supporting Membership is offered to individuals or corporations who may reside in any country or jurisdiction. Applications for Supporting Membership must be supported by one person of standing, preferably a Full Member or Member of HKMAG.
