HKMAG Announcements and Law Updates

HKMAG Membership

Members of HKMAG met on 4  September 2019, and under the provisions of the new By-laws appointed 8 Founding Full Members.  It was necessary to appoint Founding Full Members in order to form the HKMAG Committee and undertake other organisational tasks.  The Founding Full Members were selected on a purely clinical basis, and it is expected that there will be more Full Members added to the list in the near future.  The new website will contain a list of all HKMAG Members.

The Founding Full Members are:

Edward Alder                          Captain F.C. Lee
Bill Amos                                 Danny Mok, Sai Kit
Arthur Bowring                       Andrew Sheppard
Chris Howse                            Philip Yang

The new By-laws provide that there will be 3 classes of Members; Full Members, Members and Supporting Members, and all existing HKMAG Members will be asked to apply to join the most suitable membership grade.

Applicants for Full Membership are required to be Hong Kong citizens or permanent residents in and of Hong Kong. All applications will be considered by the HKMAG Committee. If an applicant has not demonstrated, in the Committee’s opinion, sufficient experience, judgement and conflict-free handling of maritime arbitration disputes, the Committee may recommend that the applicant first become a Member of HKMAG in order to gain more experience and industry recognition.

Applicants for Membership are required to be Hong Kong citizens or permanent residents in and of Hong Kong. All applications will be considered by the HKMAG Committee. If an applicant feels able to demonstrate sufficient experience, judgement and conflict-free handling of maritime arbitration disputes, the applicant may wish to apply to become a Full Member of HKMAG, by using the appropriate form.

Supporting Membership is for those individuals who do not regularly practise as maritime arbitrators and corporations who wish to support the work of HKMAG. For a small annual subscription, Supporting Members will be able to be deeply involved in the work of HKMAG, by joining Committees and advising and developing the program of HKMAG activities. In addition, Supporting Members will receive regular information on the HKMAG’s activities and invitations to the Group’s events.

Supporting Membership is offered to individuals or corporations who may reside in any country or jurisdiction. Corporate Supporting Members may nominate up to 5 representatives. Individual Supporting Members should be at least 25 years of age, and able to demonstrate that they have either been qualified as solicitor or barrister or have had suitable commercial experience for a minimum of 5 years.
